Happy Earth Day!
Earth Day‘s theme for 2026 is “our power, our planet”. We’re going to get into that by talking about the power each individual possesses to make a difference to the wellbeing of our planet.
You may feel like you don’t have enough influence to change anything, but you do! People power is real.

First of all, I want to make my intention clear. If you feel capable of implementing every action I mention, that is awesome! But I am not trying to overwhelm you or guilt you into doing all of these things. More than anything, my purpose is to make you feel optimistic and empowered because you CAN live a life that supports people, animals and the Earth.
Here’s one example: If someone sponsors a child in another country, they make a substantial positive difference to the course of that child’s life. If someone adopts a dog from a shelter, they rescue that dog from a life of hardship and give them a loving home. Likewise, you can help local birds and bees by creating a mini haven for them in your garden, on your balcony, on your windowsill. It’s easy to do. Plant some flowers loved by bees and birds, leave out some food for the birds, create or buy a bee hotel, and provide clean, fresh water. You may not be saving the whole world, but your actions genuinely matter to the lives you touch ♥
Let’s look at some actions you can take:
At Home
If you’re renting, you are limited in what you can do but you are not powerless. It is still your home. You can choose to create that tiny nature rest stop on your windowsill or to switch to a green energy supplier or to mend and reuse your appliances, furniture and clothing.

If you own your property, you can do all the things a renter can do plus so much more! Swap your concrete yard for a lush garden, implement a greywater system, add solar panels to your roof or make it green, place a bee brick or two in your wall.
Buildings created for humans have left many other species homeless. You’d be pretty mad about it if someone came along and demolished your home, offered you no compensation whatsoever, and built their own house right where yours stood. So, let’s do what we can to share our space. Let’s make our homes a celebration of all life on Earth, whether that life is frogs, bats, trees or bees!
On The High Street
You can also choose what to bring in to your home.
Bringing in nothing is a smart choice! Consumerism is not good for sustainability. Mend, repair and reuse what you have. If you need to buy something, try second-hand shops before getting something new. The creation of products and packaging has an environmental impact, as does waste.
When you go food shopping, choose local produce where you can. Let’s take honey for example. Locally produced honey is far superior to honey from abroad. If it’s coming from overseas it has a nasty amount of air miles. Local honey is also much more likely to be real, raw honey. And it’s great to support small businesses because you can easily trace the food’s journey from creation to your plate.

Protest
Sign petitions and attend protests to let the government know people care. If you’re a climate voter, shout about it!

I think it’s important for people to recognise that our actions and choices ripple far further than we can see.
Do what you can. You don’t have to be perfect. A sustainable life is an optimistic one.
